What is a Bunion?
A bunion is a type of deformity in the foot when the big toe begins to turn in toward the other toes and a prominent bump appears. This inward turn of the big toe pushes against the other toes causing pain and discomfort. Left untreated, it can cause other conditions such as hammertoes.
Treating Bunions
A proper examination will help our team decide on the best treatment option available. Some bunions can be treated through conservative, non-surgical treatment options:
- Changing shoes
- Stretching
- Padding or taping
- Medication
- Shoe inserts
- Applying ice
When Bunion Surgery is Needed
Some bunion cases require surgery to fully restore the toe to normal position. The goal of bunion surgery, or bunionectomy, is to relieve pain and discomfort by correcting the toe’s alignment. There are a number of ways to do this and a number of surgical procedures our podiatrist can utilize for this type of foot condition, even minimally invasive techniques. It’s typically determined by individual circumstance. Surgical procedures for bunions could involve:
- Removing any swollen tissue near the toe
- Removing part of the bone to straighten out the large toe
- Realigning bone between the back part of the foot and the big toe, to stretch out the abnormal angle in the toe joint
- Permanently fusing the bones of the affected joint
For the most severe cases, an osteotomy may be the only option, and this involves our foot surgeon cutting and repositioning the metatarsal bone and supporting it with the usage of wires or screws.
